Your application

Before you start

We want all our applicants to have the best chance at showcasing what they can do, what skills they have and really sell themselves so we’ve put together some tips below to help you with your application.

Before you start

When you find a job you'd like to apply for, don't start filling in the application form straight away. Take some time to prepare, as this will make the task much easier.

Gather together all the information that you'll need, including details of your academic achievements, employment history and any registrations you may need to make note of in the application.

You'll make a great first impression if you do your research - find out about Camden Council and what we stand for, our vision and our goals. Read our Camden 2025 Plan

Study the advert and job profile so that you can refer back to the specific skills and qualities that the employer is looking for as you complete the form.

Finally, read the instructions carefully to ensure that you complete the correct sections of the form and know when the deadline is.

Putting together your application

Putting together your application

It’s always best to type your supporting statement into Word first. It’s easier to edit and you can copy and paste into the relevant section later.

We want you to sell yourself. Write your application in a way that focuses on the positive impact of your day-to-day work. Verbs like ‘transformed’, ‘delivered’, ‘produced’ and ‘organised’ help to clearly demonstrate your action and its impact.

Give clear examples that demonstrate your skills, knowledge and experience.

Your examples should give a brief description of the situation or task but focus on the actions you took and the result of your actions.

Keep it relevant. It’s important to grab the hiring manager’s attention, which means putting most emphasis on skills and experience that are specifically relevant to the job. Anything in your application that doesn’t respond to requirements listed in the ad should either be left out of the application or only be mentioned briefly towards the end.
